Community Guidelines

Last updated: October 14, 2026

allthethings.gay works because people tell each other the truth about where they'll be safe and welcome. These guidelines apply to everything you send or post: place suggestions, corrections, reviews, photos, event submissions, replies from businesses, and any comments. They're part of our Terms of Use.

The Short Version

Be honest. Be kind. Share your own experience. Don't put anyone at risk.

Suggestions and Corrections

  • Suggest real places you believe are LGBTQIA+-owned or LGBTQIA+-friendly, with as much detail as you can.
  • Tell us when something's wrong: closed, moved, changed owners, or no longer welcoming. Corrections are one of the most useful things you can send.
  • Don't suggest a person's private information (home address, personal phone) or anything that would out someone. Ask the business before suggesting a home-based business.
  • Don't suggest places as a joke or to harass them, and don't submit businesses that offer conversion therapy or that work against LGBTQIA+ people.

We check suggestions before publishing them. We may edit for format and accuracy, and we can't publish everything.

Reviews

Write about your own, firsthand experience. Reviews should describe something that happened to you (or that you directly saw) at the business, within about the past 2 years.

Good reviews help others decide. Say what you experienced, how you were treated, and anything practical (accessibility, pronouns used correctly, intake forms, prices). Specific beats general.

Not allowed:

  • Fake reviews. Reviewing a business you didn't use, writing more than one review of the same visit, or posting under multiple accounts.
  • Conflicts of interest. Reviewing your own business, your employer, a family member's or close friend's business, or a competitor. Business owners and staff can respond, but not review.
  • Paid or incentivized reviews. Writing a review in exchange for money, discounts, freebies, or entries in a contest, or changing a review because you were offered something. (Businesses that offer incentives break our rules too. Please report them.)
  • Threats and extortion. Threatening a bad review to get a refund or something free.
  • Hate, harassment, and outing. Slurs, attacks on someone's identity, or revealing anyone's sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, or health without their consent, including staff and other customers.
  • Private information. Full names of private individuals (first name or role is fine, like "Dr. Kim" or "the front desk person"), contact details, medical records, or photos of people without consent.
  • Medical, legal, or dangerous claims stated as fact. It's fine to say "my therapist was great with my transition questions." It's not fine to say "this clinic is giving people dangerous drugs" without firsthand knowledge. Opinions should read as opinions.
  • Spam and promotion. Links, ads, or reviews that are really about something else.
  • Explicit content. No sexually explicit text or images.
  • Off-topic rants about politics, religion, or the business's industry in general, rather than your experience there.

Negative reviews are welcome if they follow these guidelines. We don't remove honest reviews because a business doesn't like them, and businesses can't pay to remove or bury reviews.

Discrimination reports. If you experienced discrimination, you may describe what happened in your review. You can also report it privately to hello@allthethings.gay. We look into credible reports and may pause a business's badges while we do. For legal help, see our Legal and money listings.

Photos

Post only photos you took or have permission to use. No photos where people can be identified without their consent, no explicit images, and no photos of documents with private information.

How the Community Badge Works

The Community Badge is earned from genuine, recent reviews by people who meet these guidelines. We use and anti-fraud checks. We may remove reviews that break these guidelines before calculating it. It can't be bought, and paid plans don't affect it.

Businesses Responding to Reviews

  • Respond publicly, politely, and without revealing private information about the reviewer, including anything about their health or identity, even if they disclosed it to you as a customer.
  • Don't threaten legal action in a reply. If you believe a review is false or breaks these guidelines, report it.
  • Don't retaliate against reviewers.

Reporting a Problem

Use the "Report" link on any review or listing, or email hello@allthethings.gay. Tell us what's wrong and why. We review reports usually within 5 business days, faster for safety issues.

What We Do

We may remove content, hide it while we look into it, edit for format, add a notice to a listing (for example, "We removed reviews from this business that appear to be incentivized"), limit features, or suspend accounts. We moderate based on these guidelines, not on whether content is positive or negative, and not on whether a business pays us.

If we remove your content, we'll tell you why when we can, and you may ask us to reconsider by replying to that email.

If you believe content is defamatory or violates the law, email hello@allthethings.gay with the link and details. For copyright, use our Copyright and DMCA Policy.
